Mary Josephine McKandless Gromatzky passed away July 30, 2023 in Hamilton, TX surrounded by those she loved and those who loved her dearly. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at Riley Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be August 2, 2023 at 10:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton.
Mary Jo was born August 30, 1934 in Hamilton County to Willie “Terrell” and Lily “Gladys” McKandless. She was a lifelong resident of Hamilton County. Mary Jo was a 1952 graduate of Hamilton High School and a very proud member of the 1952 State Champion girls’ basketball team.
She worked for the City of Hamilton for many years and retired in 2001. She also “moonlighted” for many years at the local Dairy Kreem and at Haile’s Pizza. In her retirement, she enjoyed working on quilt tops with her quilting friends as well as cooking and baking for friends and family. She was well-known in town for being a great cook and baker.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a very proud mom and mother-in-law, “Nenny” to her grandchildren, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved family get-togethers as well as attending the activities of her grandkids and great-grandkids. She will be very missed by all who loved her!
She was a member of Littleville Baptist Church for most of her life and was baptized in the Leon River as a young girl by Brother Simpson.
Mary Jo is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Kathleen and Boyd Holley, Sheryle and David Kopp, and Karen and Marty Jungman, six grandchildren: Jessica and Jason Coalson, Jared Holley, Tanner and Ailey Kopp, Katelin and Greg Lanting, Taylor and Colton Berry, and Ashlin and Blake Rice, Mary Jo is also survived by her sister Patsy and Stan Alexander and brother, Steve and Londa McKandless, 10 great-grandchildren, 4 nephews, 1 niece, and several great nieces & nephews.
