

Jim was born on February 1, 1938 in Bingham, Utah. His family moved several times in the Salt Lake Valley, spending time in Richfield, Park City, Midvale, Murray, and Boise, Idaho. He was the only son of the late James Richard Gurr and ArVeda (Rothlisberger) Gurr. He grew up with his three sisters Patricia, MarJeanne, and Kathryn. He graduated from Murray High School in 1956. After high school he spent some time in the Utah National Guard, and then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah ('61) and a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California ('66) in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Hughes Aircraft in Anaheim, Philco-Ford Systems in Tucson, and Litton Data Systems in Van Nuys, and later, in Agoura Hills.
Jim met his wife Karen, the love of his life, in Midvale, UT and they were married in August 1960 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They lived and raised their children in Thousand Oaks, California for over 30 years. They developed a home full of love, service, and devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ for their six children. He was completely devoted to Karen and rarely left her side when she was ill over the last year.
Jim faithfully served in many church callings throughout his life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a mentor and advisor to many inside and outside his family. He was a Bishopric Counselor to several Bishops, Young Men's President, Stake High Councilor, Ward Mission Leader, Ward Clerk, Executive Secretary, Elders Quorum Counselor, Priest Quorum Advisor, and Stake Financial Clerk. He was unusually outgoing, loved to talk to everyone, and made friends easily.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife Karen, his sister Patricia Gurr, his six children J. Jaren Gurr, Kimberly A. (Gurr) Thomason, J. Richard Gurr, Elizabeth A. (Gurr) Ioannou, J. Fredrick Gurr, and Jesse M. Gurr, along with their spouses, 26 Grandchildren, and 6 Great Grandchildren. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and mentor. He will be missed by all his family. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, MarJeanne and Kathryn.
Family and friends please join us for a funeral service on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel, 12100 Ridgecrest Road, Victorville, CA 92395. A viewing will be held at 9:30 AM at the church prior to the funeral. The Gravesite Ceremony and burial will be by Kern Hesperia Mortuary at 12:00 PM at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 2400 Waalew Road, Apple Valley, CA 92307.
