As your Ramaz teacher, I remember your parents well -- their pride in each and every one of you, their devotion to your education and self realization, and their deep and abiding love.
Virtually attending your father's funeral service today expanded my appreciation for his many admirable talents and his memorable contributions to family, medicine, the Jewish community and the world at large.

I first met Bernie when he came to Moscow in the early 80s. I remember how kind and down to earth he was, how interested in the Kabakow family history.

When I emigrated in 1991, Bernie gave me my very first job doing medical billing in his office. That job put me through the very difficult first years in the country and evening graduate school.

Barely any specialists in a private practice in Manhattan accepted Medicaid patients back then, but he did. I asked him once why, since Medicaid paid only $7.50 per visit and his workload was very heavy.  He said that seeing these patients was a mitzvah.  

Bernie was a very rare man of great kindness and tolerance with literally a heart of gold. I don't think I have met anyone like him.  He will be greatly missed.

        We were very saddened to learn of Dr. Kabakow's passing.  Our intersection with him were in the fields of assisting Jews from the former Soviet Union, and supporting the Yeshiva Ketana of Manhattan.

         He will truly be missed.



I have the greatest admiration for Bernard. He was the encyclopedia of Kabakov’s history and he loved to share the family stories. His love of the family, his genuine interest in our lives, his kindness and generosity taught us to be better human beings. I, my husband and our children will always keep Bernard in our hearts.

I married into the Kabakov’s family in 1986 in Mink, Soviet Union. I was told that there was an “uncle Bernard” in New York. So, the story also went that despite the “iron curtain”, Bernard had kept in touch with his many cousins who were left behind in Soviet Russia and he even travelled to see them. When we came to Chicago in 1989, Bernard and Celia helped us get on our feet during the first most difficult year in this country.
We and our children owe our deepest gratitude to Bernard and Celia. 

I met Bernard back in 1989 when he helped reunite my mother with my stepfather, Leonard Mering, who now have been married for 30 years. I will forever be in Bernard’s debt - not only did he bring two people together and make them happy for a lifetime, he gave me and now my children, the best future possible. He was the kindest and thoughtful man. We will all miss him.
