Thank you, my favorite aunt, for taking us places, like the Museum of Natural History, for sharing experiences with us at Lake George, and teaching us about how to live life contentedly in spite of life’s difficulties.

Most importantly, however, thank you for your love, wisdom and support you gave to all of us. Roberto and the rest of the family will always miss and think of you.

[Bob Rader's Condolence, PART II]
They too shared a very special relationship of love and caring and always considered the desires of the other, especially when it came to food like Mr. Goodbars!
Mom, too, was very close to Gloria. They met through my Dad. They were more than best friends; they were real partners. Because they lived fairly close to each other on Long Island, Gloria and Bill and my parents spent huge amounts of time together, enjoying each other’s company, going to dinners, sharing holidays.
The four of them did all the wonderful things together that families do not do much anymore because we seem to be so spread out and busy. Mom and Gloria shared a love of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles and I remember Mom and Gloria talking on the phone for hours on Sunday mornings about what each couple had each done the previous Saturday night.
She was a great complement to Uncle Billy and she loved her kids madly. And she loved all their concerts, whether in the living room or more formal places. And, we went to camp with Alan and Jonathan and I was even one of Jonathan’s camp counselors.
 Gloria was exceptionally bright and she worked for game shows in the early 1960s. I remember when she decided to be a teacher but she gave that up after about three days. We were lucky—Laurie and I got all the stencils she didn’t need anymore.
 We all know that her life was difficult health wise, but, I never saw her depressed or unhappy. I remember her boisterously bursting into our kitchen through the garage at our old house, all prepared for a very dry martini and to have a good time with the family and a big dessert at the end.

Thank you, everybody here and on zoom. Megan and I will probably be away in South Africa when the actual memorial service is held for Gloria, so please pardon me if I take a little more time than I probably should.
 
We had many wonderful aunts on both sides of the family, but Glorianne was always my favorite—the one we, the Raders, was closest to and loved most deeply.
 
From the time I was little, she supported and cared for me whenever we were together. I remember being in Grandma and Papa‘s apartment in Hewlett before they moved to a much bigger house and Gloria being there. She told me in the last few months that she had remembered feeding me when I was in a highchair in that apartment. My family says that I probably still need that affection and love—and that highchair.
 
Gloria always called me, “Roberto”. I really don’t know why, but I think it was just a sign of endearment, her love and our relationship. She was strong and had strong beliefs. I remember I once made a joke about Grandma Eva, who, if you remember her, was a real character. When I did, Gloria scolded me with a fierce look and said, “hey, that’s my mother!” She loved to joke, too, but was very protective of family.
 
She loved her father so much and gave me the one word she wanted me to use to describe him in his eulogy, “nonjudgmental.” It was a word that symbolized how he lived his life and what she treasured about him. Hew was nonjudgemental.
 
The Raders and Katzes often ate at Grandma and Papa’s house on Friday nights when we were growing up. Roast duck and roast beef, made by their cook, Mary. What could be bad?
 
It made us very close.
 
She adored my dad, her big brother, for his whole life, as much younger sisters often do with their older siblings. She affectionately called him “Brother” and she shared with us how happy she was when he came back from the war.

The first time Hiroe and Jonathan visited, we surprised Mom at Uncle Bernie's house.

Mom and Aunt Junie were like REAL sisters, just as their husbands Bernie and Bill were like REAL brothers.

Dear Mom,
We are so sad to see you go, but we are comforted by our many fond memories of you.
You were Dad’s rock, supporting him at home and in his career, even while raising Alan and me, and working as a bookkeeper, a job you did not enjoy at all, to provide extra income.
Through all that, your radiant personality shone through, as you made lasting friendships with so many of Dad’s former colleagues and students.
I myself am grateful for the many, many years of love and support. 
You always told me not to worry, that life is a series of crises.
Now I realize how precious that advice was. You were really trying to save me from myself, and I will take this advice with me as I try to navigate the rest of my life.

So grateful to have gotten to spend some time with Gloria in her final days and she was a joy to the end as I played this little piggy went to market on her toes. I thanked her for everything she gave me. She said I didn't give you much. I said you loved me and that was everything I needed. So grateful to have had you in my life and you will live in my heart as long as I can love.

The Certilman's are  deeply saddened by the passing of our  Aunt Gloria but know she is finally at peace laughing and smiling with Uncle Billy . Some of our fondest memories were spent around the Thanksgiving table with her. We will never forget the sharp, perfect tang of her amazing mustard vinaigrette, or the way she meticulously 'supervised' Lee as he carved the turkey to make sure every slice was just right and all the available "nibbles" tested for perfection. And of course, the holidays wouldn't have been the same without her signature 'mold'—even if Uncle Billy was the only one brave enough to eat it! She brought so much character and love to our family, and we will miss her dearly.
