John was born the 7th of 11 children, in a small cottage, a few miles away from the tiny village of Currow in Co Kerry, Ireland. The house was brimming full of love. As a teen, John followed in his father’s footsteps and became an accomplished carpenter. He served his apprenticeship with a locally renowned firm called Crowleys of Castleisland. He would practice at home making cupboards for his Mother. Like most of his generation, he was forced to leave Ireland and earn a living elsewhere. His first home away from home was in London, where he frequently stayed with his sister Eileen. He continued to work in carpentry and construction, including helping to build the new runways at Heathrow Airport. He made many firm, lifelong friends there and that is also where he met the love of his life, his devoted wife of 47 years, Claire Gill from Co. Galway.
In the early 1960s John immigrated to his new home in New York, where he was a proud and staunch member of the Carpenters Local Union 608. He worked on many famous landmarks including the Empire State building. He was a great Uncle to all his nieces & nephews. John went back to his beloved Ireland as often as he could and always kept in touch with his family, neighbors and friends. He had a terrific sense of humor and his eyes would twinkle so bright when he was having fun.
He is survived by his loving wife Claire, two sisters, Philomena McCloskey of Ireland and Christina Naughton of California, Auntie Joan of England and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his four brothers, Thomas Prendivile of Wisconsin, Maurice Prendiville of Ireland, Michael Prendiville of Ireland and Aeneas Prendiville of California and four sisters, Hannah McSweeney of Ireland, Eileen Dwyer of England, Mary McNama of New York and Catherine VanZee of California. He was a bedrock in our family and we will all miss him greatly. May he Rest in Peace.
