Born on June 8, 1969, in Hammond, IN, to Donald and Diane Zuleger. Cari is survived by her four children, Gina Shalabi (34), Isabelle Kalil (22), Preston Kalil (20), and Simeon Kalil (15); as well as her cherished grandchildren, Tesneem Shalabi (11) and Zain Shalabi (8). Cari's eldest child, Gina Shalabi, was born to Wally Shalabi, while her three youngest children were born to Phillip Kalil, her husband of twenty years. Known for her determination, intelligence, encouragement, and deep love for her family and friends, Cari had a contagious laugh that brightened every room. She enjoyed reading historical nonfiction, especially about World War II, spending time with her children, cooking, organizing, and finding solace in frequent trips to Goodwill, which she fondly referred to as 'retail therapy.'
At the age of 6, Cari tragically lost her father in a car accident, and she and her sister, Maria Greichunos, navigated the foster care system from a young age. She cherished her last foster family, the Gowens, and maintained a close bond with them throughout her life. Despite the challenges she faced, Cari pursued her passion, earning a degree in secretarial work from Robert Morris College in 1987. She worked diligently at the Board of Trade and later at Nipsco, touching the lives of those around her while raising her children. She furthered her education, earning a paralegal certification from Brown Mackie College in 2016.
In her final days, Cari found comfort in her growing faith and was grateful for the grace of God in her life. She was a beacon of joy and light to all who knew her and she will be deeply missed.
