Richard L Szafasz

Richard L. Szafasz, age 85, of Griffith, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (nee Maglish); four children: Ardith Szafasz, Richard A. (Sharon) Szafasz, Tracy (Andrew) Burch, and Jay Szafasz; six grandchildren: Ashley, James, Alyssa, Richelle, Anna, and Eve; two great grandchildren: Marisa and Isabella; two sisters: Irene Dumich and Alice Lummio; sister-in- law, Shirley Szafasz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Szafasz was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Lottie; two brothers: Edwin and Chester; and two sisters: Florence and Doris. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 18, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road), Highland, IN with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 525 N. Broad St., Griffith, IN with Rev. Theodore Mens officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. (prayer service 7:30 p.m.) at Kuiper Funeral Home. Mr. Szafasz was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Griffith and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8080. He retired from LTV Steel with 41 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, watching sports and traveling and vacationing with his family. He was a true "Handyman" who was loved and will be missed by family and friends.
