Harriette Brown Hogue passed away on July 10, 2025. Born on March 26, 1941, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Mr. Harry and Mrs. Genevra Proffitt Brown of Chattanooga. Harriette was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga with the exception of a few years in which she lived in Texas after marrying the love of her life, Billy Gawain Hogue. Harriette and Billy were married for 49 years.
She is survived by her beloved children, Katie (James) (Signal Mtn.); Haven (Kirk) (Signal Mtn.); and Dean (Melissa) (Signal Mtn.); plus six grandchildren, Ellie (August), Bethany, Grace, Benjamin, Sally, and Caroline. She is also survived by her twin sister Genevieve (Signal Mtn.); nephew, David (Signal Mtn.); niece, Becky (Raymond) (Auburn, AL); and great nieces and nephews, Everett, Neve, David, and Alexander (Auburn, AL).
After graduating from Central High School and the University of Chattanooga, she married Billy in 1964, and they started Craftique Manufacturing Company in the basement of their home. Harriette was the inspiration for the collegiate and Greek manufacturing business based on her love and enthusiasm for college and Greek life. Harriette played an instrumental role in the business throughout her life, working in the business after retiring as an elementary school teacher for the Hamilton County Schools.
Harriette loved her family, and was known as gmome to seven adoring grandchildren and their friends. She loved attending and cheering them on in their multitude of activities. She became a golf enthusiast and traveled to their numerous golf tournaments and camps, most recently hosting the Middlebury Golf team at her home in March. She traveled to Miami of Ohio for every
home football game to join in cheering the RedHawks on with her granddaughter, who was a member of the cheer squad. She learned about diving and was both amazed and terrified of the heights from which her granddaughter jumped in high school and college diving meets.
Gmome was extraordinarily proud of each grandchild and played a pivotal role in ensuring that each grandchild attended the college of their dreams, spanning the country from New England to California – Miami, Dartmouth, American, Middlebury, Pepperdine, and Cornell. Gmome was known for her sense of style, love of the color red, and her unwavering support and love for each grandchild.
She loved traveling with most recent trips to the Masters, Vermont, and Washington DC. The highlight of her last trip was a visit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to see a college fraternity paddle made by Craftique, which is now on permanent display.
She and Genevieve remained inseparable throughout Harriette’s life. They could often be found attending Alpha Delta Pi Sorority meetings and parties with their dear ADPi friends. Harriette served the Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi as treasurer during her college years and then serving as Financial Advisor and House Corporation President. The ADPi Christmas Party was, perhaps, her most favorite night of the year.
To honor her legacy, donations can be made in Harriette’s name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee, in memory of her beloved grandson Chas, or kindly think of her as you enjoy a middle, high school, or college golf tournament, see a
bright fire-engine red car zooming by, or enjoy the beautiful Chattanooga landscape.
Thank you all for your kindness and tremendous outpouring of love and support – The Hogues
