Paul Eugene Fuller, age 86, slipped quietly from this life into the next on August 30. He was born February 11, 1932 in Chattanooga to Mae and Floyd Fuller. Paul attended Chattanooga public schools, graduating from Central High School in 1950. After graduation, he worked at Dupont until he was drafted into the military, serving in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.
While still in the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Joyce Kistler, beginning a marriage of 65 years. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to Dupont and began taking night classes at the University of Chattanooga. He was awarded his bachelor's degree in history in 1960, receiving both National Defense and Woodrow Wilson fellowships for graduate study. He attended the University of Kentucky where he earned his PhD in history.
Paul began his teaching career at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1964. In 1973, he joined the faculty of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia where he taught until returning to Transylvania in 1977 where he remained until retirement in 1995. His life-long love of learning was expressed in rigorous but caring teaching which students recognized with the Teacher of the Year award on five separate occasions. His dissertation, Laura Clay and the Woman's Rights Movement, was published by the University Press of Kentucky in 1975.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughter Lisa (Bill) Taft, son Paul Jr., grandchildren Isabelle and Will Taft; sister Dianne Adams, brothers-in-law Bill (Dewana Lindsey) Kistler and James Barger; nieces and nephews Cindy (Butch) Thomas, Joe (Shannon) Fuller, Paul (Elizabeth) Fuller, David Fuller, James (Gia) Barger, Jayne (Paul) Huber; special friends Don and Rebecca Dugi, and beloved canine walking companion, Buddy.
