Robert John Denton

May 8, 1936 – August 4, 2016

Robert (Bob) John Denton, 80, passed away at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Georgia on 8/4/16 after a four year long battle with cancer.

Bob was born 5/8/36 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after graduating from high school Bob joined the Army in 1957. While at a USO dance in Georgia he met his bride, Betsy Barnette. They wed in 1959 and Bob whisked (strong-armed) Betsy off to Brooklyn where their 2 sons were born and then eventually to Bay Shore Long Island where their two daughters were born. They remained in NY until 1973 when Bob decided there must be an easier life than daily train and subway rides to lower Manhattan. They moved to Chattanooga and remained in Tennessee until 2009, when resort living at Sun City called their name.

The army is where he developed his love for computers and he enjoyed a successful career in IT. He started in banking at Chase Manhattan Bank and then First Tennessee Bank brought him to Chattanooga before closing out his career at Dixie Yarns in 1990.

Bob was a fantastic artist, drummer, excellent bowler, pool player and wood worker. He built bookcases for his daughter that have been enjoyed by three generations and another set that are currently in their garage and holding strong after 40 years. He loved cheering for the Braves as he and Betsy watched the nightly games. But nothing could compete with his love of golf! He often played in local tournaments and even won a car in 2003 for a hole-in-one! In total he had 7 holes-in-one throughout his career. He loved playing with his golfing buddies, both in Valleybrook Golf and Country Club as well as Sun City Peachtree Golf, even though they complained he always took their money!

Bob is survived by his wife Betsy of 57 years. Children David and his wife Debbie, Ken and wife Pam , daughter Judy and husband Roger Bishop, Gail and husband Chad Scott, 10 loving grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and even granddogs! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (BopBop) and friend to all.

Visitation for Mr. Robert “Bob” Denton will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 from 2:00 – 3:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home 1891 West McIntosh Rd. Griffin, GA 30223. Following visitation, a memorial service will be conducted in the chapel where Chaplain Jim O’Bryan will officiate. In addition, visitation will be held in Chattanooga on Tuesday August 9, 2016 from 3:00-4:00pm at the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, 5401 Hwy 153, Hixson TN 37343. Following visitation a graveside service will be held at 4:00pm at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
