On January 29, 2026, Ruth took her last breath in this life, and her first breath in the arms of Her Savior, Jesus. Ruth was born on September 28, 1947, in Humboldt, TN to Helen (Roberson) Johnson and Ezra Johnson, both of which preceded her in death along with her loving sister, Carolyn Hayden and nephew.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lewis; children, Teresa Sawyers, Greg (Nikki) Sawyers, and Renee Rhone; and grandchildren, Emma Claire (Jacob) Copeland, Samuel David Sawyers, and Norah Paige Sawyers. She is also survived by one brother, Kenneth Johnson (Nancy); and two sisters, Gracie Mooneyham (Chuck) of Water Valley, MS, Linda Stout of Dyersburg, TN. Ruth is also survived by beloved brother-in-law, Joe Hayden; dear friend, Cindy Johnson; and 8 nephews and nieces.
Ruth graduated from Dyersburg High School in 1965, one of five siblings. A tomboy at heart, she loved being outdoors and playing sports. Her adventurous spirit continued throughout her life.
From 1990 to 2022, Ruth dedicated her career to Cigna Healthcare, where she worked in various roles over 32 years. Her colleagues respected and loved her, leading to many cherished friendships.
On September 15, 1967, Ruth married Lewis in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Together, they raised three children and moved to Hixson in 1989. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother, deeply involved in her husband and children's lives, whether coaching softball or volunteering at their schools. One of her favorite family memories was traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, to watch the Braves play against the St. Louis Cardinals. She also enjoyed trips to Pigeon Forge with her sisters and brother-in-law.
Ruth had a passion for craft shows, sewing, gardening, and watching Atlanta Braves baseball. Her love for these activities brought joy to her life and those around her.
In her community, Ruth was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church, where she and her husband contributed significantly. She created great meals and environments for weekly fellowship events and was involved in many areas of the church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Jon Keck, Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Smith, and the night nurses in the CCU at Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care towards Ruth.
Ruth held dear the scripture, "For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
A visitation for Ruth will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Harmony Baptist Church in Chattanooga and again on Wednesday, February 4th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The funeral service will follow the visitation on Wednesday starting at 1:00 pm with Pastor Phillip Trask officiating.
After the service, family and friends will proceed to Hamilton Memorial Gardens for the committal service.
Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson. Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com
