Steve was a 1966 graduate of Central High School in Nashville, TN and attended MTSU until he joined the U. S. Army Reserve where he served as a Master Sergeant for 20 years. He saw service with the 401st MP Camp in Nashville with the majority of his service with 3397th U. S. Army Garrison in Chattanooga, as an Assistant Operations Sergeant and Military Police Operations Sergeant. He retired following his service in the Desert Storm operation.
Steve worked for Gilman Paint and Duron Paint as Store Manager and for K-Mart as an Assistant Manager before working at Home Depot as the Paint Department Manager. He retired from Home Depot after 20 years.
Steve was an avid Tennessee fan. Because of his athletic background he loved football, basketball and baseball, with baseball becoming his favorite since his sons played. He spent many summers coaching their baseball teams and attended most every game they participated in whether it was summer ball, high school or college ball. The love he had for his sons was passed on to his grandchildren. There were many times he spent hours trying to locate toys that they would request for Christmas, sometimes to the point of annoying the toy store employees, but only the grandchildren mattered to him. He also tried to attend any sports they played although this proved difficult during the past several years. Even then, he always tried to talk with them about their accomplishments.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben Franklin and Frances Novelene Shelton Carter.
Steve is survived by his wife, Martha Joan Phillips Carter; 3 sons, Brian (Bridget) Carter of Nolensville, TN, Glen (Lindsey) Carter of Chattanooga, TN, and Jeffery (Allison) Carter of Nolensville, TN.
Grandchildren, Brilynn, Eli, Colton, Madison, Kylie, Makena, Ripken, and Wrigley Carter, and Audrey and Parker Kinard.
Great Grandson, Brooks Taylor.
Sister, Janice G. Love of Muskegon, Michigan; 3 nieces, a nephew, and many cousins.
