Terry Duane Shumaker, age 78, passed away Sunday morning, December 14, surrounded by his family. He was born May 31, 1947, in Hueytown, Alabama, to the Rev. William Jesse and Audrey Lagle Shumaker. He grew up in Childersburg, Alabama and after graduating high school, attended Lee College and graduated from Jacksonville State University, after which he married the love of his life, Linda Faye Maxwell. Terry and Linda were married for 56 years and raised three children - Kristi, Brent, and Janine in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Terry was a faithful member of The Crossing church (Formerly East Ridge Church of God) since the 1970’s. He worked as an accountant throughout his career and retired from Horizon Stone in 2013.
Terry had a joy in his heart that he was known for and quick to share. He lived by three simple rules: 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, 2) Love your neighbor as yourself, and 3) Laugh as loudly and as often as you possibly can. He was the most kind, humble, and happy person that you could ever meet, and he was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, uncle, colleague, and friend. He was loved dearly by everyone who knew him.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, William Jesse and Audrey Shumaker, his sister Hilda Bean, and his brothers Tommy Shumaker and W.J. Shumaker. We are pretty sure they are all sitting around a piano and singing right now.
Terry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda; his sister Vicki (Jack) Goggins; two daughters, Kristi Sutherland of Huntsville, AL., and Janine (Jeff) Varner of Cincinnati, OH; his son, Brent (Sharon) Shumaker of Knoxville, TN; and seven grandchildren, Christian (Gabby) Sutherland, Jason Sutherland, Britton Shumaker, Brianna Sutherland, Julia Shumaker, Harrison Varner, and Sam Varner.
Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 18 at the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, December 19 at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, with Rev. Chad Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Crossing Church.
