

William Harry “Bill” McCool, 84, passed away Wednesday, October 24. He was a life-long resident of Chattanooga. He was known as a man who lived a life of service to others. He was an avid sportsman and loved time spent with his family and friends.
He was a U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Korean War, where he was among the heroes of Chosin Reservoir. He was a 1946 graduate of Chattanooga Central High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. Bill spent his career in the finance and insurance industry, having retired as President of SunTrust Insurance Company.
Bill was an active member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also deeply involved in civic service, having been a member of Chattanooga Jaycees, Downtown Kiwanis, Past-President of City Farmers and Half-Century Clubs. He was a charter member of the Chattanooga Waterski Club, having made his own skis. Bill also served on the Board of the Opportunity Home for Girls in Highland Park.
He was a lifetime member and Past President of the Wolftever Fishing Club and a long-time volunteer with Tennessee Valley Railroad, where he served as Conductor.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, C.W. and Daisy McCool and a sister, Irma Lee McCool.
Survivors include Norma McCool, his wife of 59 years; a son, Dr. Harry W. (Angela) McCool of Grayson, GA and daughter, Norma Jan McCool of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Harry W. (Brittany) McCool II of Concord, NC and Ginny McCool (Johnathan) Hargette of Stallings, NC; a brother, William E. McCool of Chattanooga and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 PM to 5 PM Sunday, October 28 at the North Chapel and Monday from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Signal Crest United Methodist Church (Signal Mountain). A service will be held Monday at 12:30 PM at Signal Crest with Dr. Mark Gooden officiating; burial to follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
The family wants to thank Alexian Brothers Valley Alzheimers residence and Avalon Hospice for their excellent, loving care of Bill.
