Andrew (Andy) Jacob Warren Jr. was born in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, November 28, 1923 but grew up in Galveston, Texas. As one of the “Greatest Generation,” Andy was a proud American and a very positive person who never dwelled on the negative. He grew up during the Depression and began working at the age of 13 in a grocery store - but dropped a crate of eggs on his very first day and was fired. Not one to give up, Andy quickly found another job and continued working until he was 83 years old. He became a picture show operator (like his father), a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M. in Galveston, worked for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the Galveston docks, Amaco Refinery in Texas City, Galloway Florist, and finally learned to upholster furniture and was employed by Cy-Fair ISD as a upholsterer until his retirement.
Andy proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force as a Signal Corp/Radio Operator in World War II (Calcutta, India) and the Korean War and in the reserves for a total of 20 years. After the war, he met and married the love of his life, Liz, and was happily married for 65 years. They raised five children: Jay, Roger, Cindy, Steve and Barry.
In 1965 they moved the family to Houston and quickly joined Jersey Village Baptist Church where he served as an active member and deacon. As they grew older, he and Liz went on many fun trips with members of their Sunday School class: from day long bus trips, over-night Senior Choir trips, trips to Colorado and even Europe. He also dearly loved playing Joker every Thursday night at church and Sundays at Lin Gaddy’s. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but his legacy will live on through the examples and Christian lifestyle that he lived daily in front of all of us.
At the age of 90, Andy passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew J. Warren Sr., his mother, Gladys Warren, and his younger brother, Robert Warren, who was killed in World War II. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Warren, and his children - Andrew (Jay) Jacob Warren III, Roger Warren, Cindy and husband Richard Gilbert, Steve Warren, Barry and wife Mickey Warren; grandchildren – Annie and Johnathen Barnes, Thomas Warren, Jacob Gilbert, Casey Warren and Stephanie Warren and by great grandchildren – Ella Warren, Jorja Barnes, Miles Warren and Cady Barnes.
Family and friends will gather for a visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery, 1101 Antoine Drive, after which, all are invited to a celebration of Andy's life at 12:00 noon, in the Sanctuary of Jersey Village Baptist Church, 16518 Jersey Drive in Houston, Texas, 77040, (713) 466-6102. Reverend Andrew Werley will officiate.
