Clare Volta Fleckenstein Drummond, age 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2012 in Houston, Texas. She was born on Friday, January 6, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the only child of Harold and Clara Fleckenstein.
Clare graduated from Gratz High School in Philadelphia, she then went to work as a receptionist where she met her husband of 52 years, David Drummond. His employment moved the family from Philadelphia, to Pittsburgh (Pa), to Louisville (Ky), then Dallas (Tx). By this time she was raising 4 children, William, Daniel, Nancy and Lois.
Clare took art classes and produced works in painting as well as sculpture. While in Dallas, she graduated Southern Methodist University majoring in Sociology. Finally, the family settled in Houston, where she was a strong member of Chapelwood Methodist Church, especially in over three decades of service in the Chancel Choir. Clare also contributed to both Sunday school and Bible Study classes, as well as proof read as a volunteer. She also worked for over fifteen years at the retail fabric chain best known as Cloth World. Clare produced several unique pieces of art with her quilts and wall hangings, many of which were hand sewn. She also produced clothes; including designing and making both her daughter’s wedding dresses.
Clare survived breast cancer twice, the passing of her husband, as well as hurricane Ike putting a tree through the front of her home. After the onset of her first bout with breast cancer, Clare found herself often inspired to write poetry. She continued writing poetry for the next decade, many of which she shared with her church and family.
Her four children, their three respective spouses, and four grandchildren survive her, to whom she was devoted and who love and miss her very much.
A memorial service celebrating Clare’s life was held in the sanctuary of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay in Houston, on Saturday, February 25th, at 10:00 a.m.
