Reverend Clyde H. Thompson passed from this life into eternity on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at 91 years of age. Rev. Thompson was born February 7, 1923, in Palestine, Texas, to parents Henry Blanchard Thompson and Francis (Hassell) Thompson. He was raised in De Soto Parish, Louisiana, and after graduating from Longstreet High School in 1940, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Before being deployed into action during World War II, he met a beautiful dark haired young lady named Gladys Litton. A sweet courtship led to a wedding on May 10, 1942. Rev. Thompson proudly served his country while in the Navy as a crew member of a PT boat, and then returned home to raise a family of three children. He worked for 15 years at Hughes Tool, and then surrendered to his calling to be a pastor. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Beasley, Texas from 1952-1957. In 1957, with his faith in the Lord as his guide, he was the founding pastor of First Baptist Church Lomax in La Porte, Texas. He then went onto pastor Garden Road Baptist Church in Pearland from 1968–1992. Although he retired in 1992, he returned to First Baptist Church Lomax to serve as Associate Pastor for many years.
The stories of how Rev. Thompson touched so many lives are endless. He was notoriously giving money, food, vehicles, and clothing to anyone in need. His children often came home to find him with a visitor in the pantry, giving them food to hold them over for a time. His love of gardening was well known, and his tomato plants were in the flowerbeds or anywhere he believed they would grow best. He would often give his wife roses, and as they began to wilt, he would take them out and graft them into other rosebushes to produce a beautiful flower again. He collected many things, and was it common for him to give his grandchildren some token of his collection when he saw them. His legacy of love is vast, and words are not enough to express all he did for his Lord, family, friends, and people in general.
Rev. Thompson was preceded in death by: his parents; son, John L. Thompson; and grandson, Steven Thompson. Rev. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Gladys Thompson; daughter, Sharron Young; son, Allen Thompson and wife Janet; grandchildren: Sheri Walker and husband Gordon, John L. Gordon and wife Marlo, Tim Gordon and wife Lori, Carroll Thompson, Blake Thompson and wife Kristi, Scott Thompson and wife Tanya; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Blanche Monday and Marcia Rozman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, June 2, 2014 at Forest Park Lawndale Chapel with David Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of the usual remembrances, a memorial donation may be made to First Baptist Church Lomax, 11303 N. H Street, La Porte, TX 77571.
