Dorothy Geraldine Niland Toole – acrobatic tap dancer, dance teacher, and seamstress extraordinaire – passed away at home in Beverly Hills, CA on January 13th, 2025. The self-described “Matriot” of the Toole family, she was also known as “Dot,” “Dotsy,” and “Mim” to those who loved her.
Born in Galveston, Texas on September 20th, 1925, Dorothy was delivered at home to parents Clara and Tom Niland and older sister Mary Margaret. After moving to Houston, little brother T.K. joined the family. In the 1930’s, Dorothy and her older sister Mary Margaret thrived in tap, ballet and acrobatic classes. Their love of dance eventually led to opening The Niland School of Dancing, which they ran very successfully for many years. Dorothy met her husband William West Toole when they were pre-teens. He was the boy around the corner from her parents’ home in Houston, Texas. They married June 24th, 1946 and shared a wonderful 70 years together until West’s death in 2016. Their pride and joy was their daughter Annette. They were also devoted grandparents to Nell and Anna Geisslinger, and their step-grandson Fletcher McKean. After retirement, Dorothy sought out many volunteer opportunities teaching dance to people of all ages. She enjoyed knitting blankets to donate to hospitals.
In addition, she is survived by her son-in-law Michael McKean, her nieces and nephews Patricia, Chris, Thomas Outwin, KT and Casey Niland, Douglas Moser, sister-in-law Mildred Niland, cousins Mary Ann Carroll, Terry Weiss, Tammy Grace, Michael Weiss, caregivers Laura Rodriguez, Olga Rodriguez, Denia Wade, Sonia Delgado, and many friends made over her 99 years.
A graveside service for Dorothy will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale St, Houston, TX 77023.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – and keep on dancing.
