

Elfreida Louise Bleimeyer Hammond, age 92, died on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in Fairhope, Alabama. She was born at home in the Woodland Heights at 111 Alma Street, to Minna and Arthur Bleimeyer. Elfreida attended Wm. B. Travis Elementary, James S. Hogg Junior High and graduated from Reagan High School, class of 1940. To satisfy a lifelong ambition, she attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in downtown Houston. While There, our nation entered World War II, causing major changes in the lives of our citizens. She met and married a Navy man who was attending the University of Houston. Because of hospital rules, they were married secretly in order for her to finish nurse’s training. Her husband, H.B. Hammond, served in the Navy until the end of the war.
Elfreida embarked on a lifetime of working in many capacities as an R.N. She truly loved nursing, and they loved her. Later in life, Elfreida volunteered at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama where she lived with her daughter for many years. She lived the rest of her life in Fairhope Health and Rehab Center.
She is preceded in death by her parents and Brother: Arthur Bleimeyer Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Bleimeyer Maxwell and Husband Bobby Maxwell of Humble, Texas. Also, her two children: Jodie Lynn Hammond O’Daniel of Fairhope and Scott Hammond and wife Lisa of Statesville, North Carolina. Her grandchildren: Amy and her husband Kenny Smith and Eric and wife Regina Craig of Fairhope, four great granddaughters: Courtland and Kennedy Craig, and Savannah and Lanie Smith: many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The funeral service and burial will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home and Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, Texas, 77023, on Saturday January 25th, 2014 at 11:00a.m.
