

Eva Ann Chambers (Penny), aged 86, of Conroe, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Penny was born at the home of Clinton and Annie Bell Fake on September 22, 1936, to parents Jesse Guy Attaway & Helen M. Fake of Houston, Texas.
Jesse and Helen had three boys, Clinton Roy, Jesse Robert (Bobby), and Donald Dene, before having their only girl, Penny. Penny is preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers.
Penny was always very attractive, active, and popular growing up. Because she liked a newspaper comic character named Penny, who supposedly had red hair, she dyed her hair red and started going by the name “Penny”. She loved dancing, playing games, such as Yahtzee and cards, watching the Astros, and gardening. Penny played the piano and enjoyed singing. For several years Penny was involved in Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and teaching English to Asian immigrants who attended her church. Penny was an accomplished oil painter, focusing on blue bonnets, horses, and seascapes.
Penny graduated from Southwestern Bible School in Waxahachie, where she graduated at just 16 years old.
Penny’s first job was at Prudential Insurance and then she moved on to Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she worked for over 21 years. Penny worked in the accounting department and later worked as a “inside lineman”, a job few women held in those days. After years as a homemaker, Penny reentered the job market finding work with Mobil Oil.
Penny married her first husband, Gilbert Earlie Cooke in 1956. Penny gave birth to her only daughter, Sharon Neysa on August 31, 1957. Gilbert Earlie Cooke, Jr. was born on March 3, 1961. Sharon provided granddaughter, Kristin Rene’ Haughee (Leitzsey) and great-grandchildren, Ceara Lee Dove, Stella Gloriana Leitzsey and Alan Jackson (AJ) Leitzsey. Penny is preceded in death by her ex-husband, Gilbert, and son Gilbert Jr.
Penny met Steve Chambers while shopping at Montgomery Wards and they wed on March 7, 1975. Their marriage added stepson Gregory and stepdaughter Ginger. Greg provided granddaughter Kasside Chambers (Thomas), who then provided great-grandchildren, Brooke Hickey, Paige Hickey, and Brantley Thomas. Greg’s son Zachary Chambers provided great-grandchildren, Alyssa Chambers, Alayna Chambers, Zoe Chambers, and Stewart Chambers. Steve’s daughter Ginger provided grandson Justin, who then provided great-grandsons, Hunter, Ty and Lane. Ginger’s son, Josh, provided great-grandsons Kolt and Jackson. Ginger also provided granddaughters Savannah and Delanie.
Steve and Penny lived in the Houston area for most of their 48 years of marriage. Keeping a special promise he made to Penny, Steve stayed by her side providing constant care and companionship through the years of her declining health, until her last breath Wednesday morning. January 11.
Penny’s favorite scriptures included Isaiah 63:8 and James 3:5-18.
