Faustino (Tino) Zepeda Ortiz, Jr., joined his Heavenly Father on August 28, 2017. Tino was born May 20, 1937, to Marta Zepeda Ortiz and Faustino Ortiz, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death. Also preceding him in passing were his mother-in-law Francisca Flores Echauri, father-in-law Miguel Echauri, Sr., sisters-in-law Gloria Ortiz and Katherine Echauri, brothers-in-law Mike and Refugio, and nephew Anthony Echauri. Tino was also the eldest of five brothers. Julian, Arnold (Gloria), Albert (Flor) and George (Janie) survive him.
Tino was a loving husband to María Elena (Helen) Echauri Ortiz to whom he was married for 57 years. He was father to daughter Alisa Louise Ortiz Hemker and son-in-law Jeffrey Hemker. Christopher Michael Tristan is his only grandchild. He also adored Keanu, his little dog of 14 years. Tino’s family was his pride and joy.
Tino began his career in produce when he was just 15 years old. He told the story of going to Produce Row in Houston as a young boy and selling produce for his Uncle Emilio to make enough money to buy a bowl of chili. Until the day he passed, Tino claimed it was the best bowl of chili he ever had. Through his hard work and ambition, he went on to become Produce Manager and successfully held that position for more than 45 years.
A life-long Houstonian, Tino loved his hometown sports teams the Astros, Oilers, Texans, Cougars and Rockets. He enjoyed the last 27 years in retirement, reading the Houston Chronicle front-to-back daily and keeping his lawn beautifully landscaped.
Tino passed just nine days short of his 58th wedding anniversary. He was happiest when he and Helen were side-by-side working on the daily Jumble, grooming the back yard, watching a good movie, taking care of Keanu or just talking to each other.
A special thanks to the family and friends who were so supportive during this difficult time, as well as his caregivers Don, Shawnte, Marcelie, Cecilia, Janet and Vitas Healthcare.
Tino was known for the beautiful smile he gave you each time you encountered him. May he Rest in Peace.
