Fidel is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Elaine Villegas; his three beloved children, Fidel Villegas Jr., Laurie L. Menchaca, and Leslie M. Villegas; his cherished daughter- and son-in-law, Shirin B. Villegas and Luis Menchaca. He will be forever remembered by his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Luis Menchaca Jr., Natalie V. Menchaca, Lorenzo Menchaca, Alana R. Ramirez, Seth J. Villegas, Fidel Villegas III, Tomas J. Villegas, Vincent C. Ramirez, Lucio Menchaca, and Nayeli J. Herrera.
He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers Pedro Villegas and Juan Villegas, and his sisters Norma Frederiksen, Magdelena Montemayor, Lydia Skelly, Beatrice Scardino, and Sandra Griggs, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and close relatives.
Fidel was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosa Villegas, and his brothers Joe and Carlos Villegas.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Fidel spent his teenage years in Houston, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Elaine. Together they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering love. Some of his greatest joys came from his family—taking trips together to the Bahamas, Cancun, the Caribbean, and cities across the United States. His final family vacation, spent in Oklahoma surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, was a true reflection of his happiest place—being with family.
He took an active role in the lives of his grandchildren by teaching them life skills, caring for them like his own, teaching them to whistle like a bird and his silly magic tricks. He cherished each and every one of them and would truly light up at any opportunity to spend time with them. Whether it was admiring classic cars, going to see Marvel movies, watching football with his grandson, going to watch his grandsons’ football games, wrestling matches or simply spending the day having lunch and shopping with his granddaughters, Fidel was always happy to be there.
Fidel was a devoted and hardworking man, known for his unmatched work ethic and dedication to his craft. For over 40 years, he worked as a skilled tile setter, creating beautiful and enduring works of art. Alongside his brothers, he brought creativity and craftsmanship to countless homes, buildings, and stores across the United States. His attention to detail and pride in his work left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him or seeing his artistry.
We have so many things to be thankful for in this lifetime, and first and foremost is that we were blessed to be raised and loved by our father, Fidel, in a home always filled with warmth and love. Our loving parents made sure we were surrounded not only by their affection but also by the love of our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and each other.
We shared countless wonderful times together. Although Dad was not rich in material things, he was wealthy beyond measure in family and love. Fidel took great pride in all that he did and lived his life with honesty and integrity. His example of loyalty, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family touched everyone who knew him.
We will forever carry in our hearts the lessons he taught us—both in life and in death—and we will always be grateful for the love and guidance he gave so freely.
