I want to share some memories. As a child, Gayle loved to put on plays, along other kids (family, friends, neighbors if needed). She also enjoyed singing, particularly Volare (Nel Blu di Pinto di Blu).  I’m not sure I ever believed she knew the actual Italian words - but she swore she knew them by heart.

I remember she suffered a broken leg at about four years old. We were walking up the sidewalk one day when a kid we knew came the other way on a bike. She fell and the bike ran over her leg. 

I remember her First Communion. I remember a lot of different hairdos. I remember getting her a car. 

Mostly,  I think about the many adult years we seemed to always be at one’s home or another to hang and drink and smoke and cook and play cards or throw dice. My final observation on those recollections are summed up totally by Gayle’s most repeated quote: “How do you play 99?”  We always had a great time. 

Life took a few turns, but connections never severed.  She went to Texas. Mary and I went to Canada. Suddenly it was 1990 and she was turning 40! Sibs flew to Austin to surprise her for that birthday, and her reaction was priceless.  Together again. 

We were reunited in Georgia for a few years. We got to swim and boat and fish. I watched her create gardens and play with the lame pug next door. 

Fast forward a few years, and Mary an I are in Florida when Robin and Dave arrive. Gayle follows soon. Then Lynn arrives. Amazing miracle! Another chance to be together once again. A little more time for cards and swimming and cooking and cocktails and whatever.  But the clock moved a lot faster than anyone expected and the grains ran out for my longest friend.  Fly, baby.

Will never forget all our chats when you were visiting Houston (prior to you moving here).    We really did think we solved world hunger.  Fly high my friend, you are loved and will be missed.

To my favorite big sister, 
 It is going to be hard to not have you in my world, because you were there from the beginning of it. I have so many memories through the years, some of the best being the family gatherings at the Silver Lake house, and before that hanging out with you at your apartment in South Lyon (listening to your quad stereo or watching Kung Fu) before you had Carrie and Dan. But one special time for me was in '81 when I was desperately looking for work. I called and asked if you could put me up at your house in Austin. You were working hard to raise a young family at the time, and the last thing you needed was a house guest for four months! But you took me in anyway. The special part was the opportunity we had to just talk for hours over coffee. And the intense Atari Space Invader matches we had, (which YOU always won!). Those times made me feel even closer to you. The countless phone calls, the visits in Florida, all helped us stay close since then. I will miss you very much. So save me a seat at the table in that big tavern in the sky with all the family members that have gone before, and I will see you then.

It's too hard to say goodbye to my sister, I struggle to find the words. Memories of her flood my brain, but I cannot articulate the loss. She was my oldest sister, my protector, and my teacher. She blazed the way for all of the sisters and showed us how to make our own way. It's not easy to smile through pain or to get back up after getting smacked down, but she did it. Over and over again. Despite her gentle demeanor and frail exterior, she had a toughness and resiliency that was to be admired. I miss her smile, her laughter, and her warm hugs already.

This is tough. I'm not as gifted in the expression of feelings as you were and my thoughts are muddled. I have childhood memories that will forever remind me of you, like the first time using a microwave oven, orange formica countertop, and having a safe haven right next door. I cherish the last few years in Florida with boat trips and picnics and Anna Maria Island. To say you will be missed is an understatement, but my joy at the thought of you dancing with angels makes it bearable. Fly high, my sister. I love you.

Whether I was 4 or 40, in good times and in the not-so-great ones, you always made sure I knew...
“You know how much I adore you, right?” 
It always felt like you were telling me the perfect little secret and I’ll miss it and you so very much. 

All the words seem to fall terribly short here, so I will just steal yours since they always meant so much.

My eldest sis, we’ve had a long journey together despite our 10-year age difference. You were my “sibling twin” – a decade apart. When I was growing up you ended up right next door on Rushton Road as you were having your babies. I was just a teenager, but you gave me the wonderful experience of helping to know and help raise your babies - Carrie and Danny. I spent a lot of time at your house. You sold me my first car – that huge Pontiac with the huge engine – and then turned me into the Parents when I hit a traffic cone and scratched it, lol. Eventually you moved to Silver Lake with your kiddos – and it was the happiest time for you. I was going off to college and then getting married. You gave me my “going off to college” party at your house and then within a year you also hosted my bridal shower there - with a Ms. Piggy theme – so appropriate and fun. Hosting those events for me showed me the love you had for me. I remember coming down to Austin just about every year after you moved. I remember how happy you were in Georgia – with your gardens, the lakefront, your wonderful crazy neighbor ladies (from the heart of my bottom!). You were happy.  My daughter caught her first fish at your place. Years later we were reunited in Florida, where we decorated your place together. I will miss you always – you have a place deeply engrained in my heart. I will see you again, I know that to be true. Now fly with the winds and the feathers until then.

My dearest Sis, 
How do I say goodbye to you?  I have known, loved  and depended on you for as long as I have been on this earth.  You played so many different roles in my lifetime. First of all big sister, mom, best friend, roommate and confidant. 
We have had fights of a lifetime and loved each other through it all.  
It has been a great privilege to have you by and on my side through out this journey.  Thank you for all your guidance in this journey of life. I will forever carry you in my heart ❤️
