Genette Elizabeth Cheeks, lovingly known as “Gee,” entered eternal rest on June 10, 2025. Born on February 6, 1946, in Houston, Texas, she was the fourth of seven children born to William Cheeks and Alberta Morrison. Raised on Hempstead Highway, Genette grew up surrounded by family, faith, and purpose.
A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1964, Genette’s grace and leadership were evident early on—she was crowned Miss Booker T. Washington.
She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Texas Southern University (TSU) in 1969. While at TSU, she took part in civil rights protests and sit-ins, which sparked a lifelong commitment to justice and equity.
In 1968, Genette married Marshall Smith, Jr. Their union was blessed with two children, Marshall Anthony and Kristin Nicole. Genette’s love for her family was unwavering, and she was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.
2 / 2
A woman of strong Christian faith, she worshipped and served at Central Garden MBC, Greater True Light MBC, Sunlight Tabernacle, and most recently at Philippians New Faith MBC under Senior Pastor Dr. Montari Morrison Sr.
Her professional life reflected her passion for education and advocacy. She impacted countless lives while working for Houston ISD, Region 4 ESC, Fort Bend ISD, North Forest ISD, and LaPorte ISD. She saw education as a gateway to opportunity and fairness for all children.
Beyond education, Genette was a community force. Whether fighting against environmental injustice in Northeast Houston, organizing neighborhood efforts, or block walking for candidates who shared her values, Genette lived what John Lewis called “good trouble.”
Genette was also a joyful spirit—a proud foodie and faithful supporter of local restaurants. She found joy in good conversation, great food, and giving back.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alberta; husband, Marshall Jr.; and siblings William Jr., Carol, Barbara, and Glenn.
She leaves to celebrate her legacy: her children, Marshall Anthony Smith and Kristin Nicole Smith; grandchildren Jasmine, Keera, Jeremy, and Katelyn; sister Sylvia Ponder; brother Gregory Cheeks (Yvette); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church members, friends, and those who lovingly called her “Momma.”
Whether you knew her as Momma, Ladybug, Ms. Smith, Gee, G-ma, or Granny—her signature farewell always rang true:
“Love you much.”
