and surrounded by people. She died on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Autumn Grove
Cottage for Memory Care at the age of 88. Helen was born on November 16, 1929 at her
grandmother’s home in McKinney, Texas and lived her early years in Houston and Chicago. At
the age of seven her family settled in Houston, where she lived the rest of her life. She
graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 1948, and two years later married her high school
sweetheart. During the early years of her marriage, she worked as a bookkeeper at Downtown
Chevrolet and Mike Persia Chevrolet. Some years later, she returned to work and became
Office Manager of Mort Hall Ford. After the death of her loving husband Brice at the young age
of 52, she never dated and often said that she had lost the best husband she would ever have
and that no one else could compare. Upon retiring, she was very involved with her beloved St.
Alban’s Episcopal Church, serving as a Vestry member and Treasurer for many years.
In later life she had numerous physical challenges, but through the help of her favorite doctor,
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Henry Small, she continued to live a full and involved life. She traveled
with her dear sister Katherine and her cherished friends Pat and Joan, collecting Hull pottery.
She also loved accompanying her children and friends on their vacations. She loved ‘running
the streets’ with her lifelong friend, Martha, and had fun adventures with Martha and Teeter,
another childhood friend, the three of them referring to themselves as The Three Musketeers.
She also enjoyed just sitting in front of her large window, watching the birds and squirrels and
admiring her garden, although being the busy person she was, she never sat very long.
Helen loved her family more than words could ever express, taught us all how to do the same,
and proudly watched over every family gathering in gratitude that her family loved one another
and enjoyed each other’s company. She made every holiday a special one and left us many
traditions to cherish, as well as recipes from her Greek heritage. Helen never met a stranger
and enjoyed a large circle of friends, some of whom consider her a second mother. She loved
pinochle parties, playing games, working puzzles, and her Luv Ya Blue Oilers. Her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember her as the loving matriarch whose face lit up
and arms opened wide when they saw each other. Her love of babies was undeniable.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Brice Green; her parents; Brice’s family; her siblings
Margaret, Katherine, and Jimmy; and many other loved ones. She is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law Elaine and Brad Young, Beth and Dan McConnell, and Dana and Jeff Walton;
her grandchildren and their spouses Aimi and Mike Dunn, Lee and Merrie Wilson, Benjamin
Walton, Cara McConnell, Nicholas Walton, and Molly McConnell; her great-grandchildren
Griffin, Oriana, and Zephyr Dunn; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends she
considered as family. Pallbearers will be three generations of her loving family.
The family would like to extend their love and deep appreciation to Carolyn Llorens and all of
the staff at Autumn Grove Cottage for their loving care and very personal attention they gave to
Mom, while providing her with a homelike environment the past four years.
For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association
