Helen was born in Bearden, Arkansas in 1928, the third of four children. She encountered many hardships in her life, but with her fierce nature and survivor’s spirit she never failed to tackle them head on. Helen was a story teller and her life’s struggles left no shortage of stories to tell. Even so, she managed to incorporate humor, adventure and her unique signature into every tale. She worked many jobs from the time she was young, and later occasionally took jobs to help support the family, but is mostly remembered for being a loving mother and wife as the family eventually settled in Houston, Texas with her husband and three children.
Helen was very proud of her heritage. Her physical attributes all favored her Irish ancestry, but she was also an official member of the Northern Cherokee tribe and looked forward to receiving their regular newsletters. Her mother was a descendant of the Cherokee and her father a descendant of the Choctaw. Her grandmother, who helped in raising her, gave her her Indian name, Little Mockingbird, because of the coos and chatter she would call back to her when she was young.
Helen lived a full life and spent much of her retirement outdoors. She had a green thumb and grew all varieties of flowers in her garden, of which she was quite proud, and planted crops in the garden down by the barn. She loved them all, but roses were her favorite.
Above all else, Helen loved her family. She kept close to her family in Arkansas with regular phone calls and letters, sending pictures and videos, and visiting as often as she could. She was proud of all her children and instilled in them the importance of family.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years Walter Duff “Buddy” Turner, her son Raymond Wesley Taylor, grandson DJ Bruce, and three siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Lois Johnson and Charlotte Taylor; six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly. “All babies are Grany’s babies”.
Helen has earned her eternal rest but her lively spirit, long stories and warm smile will be dearly missed.
