Henry Everts

Henry Porter Everts Jr. was born May 24, 1937 at Hermann Hospital in Houston to Henry Porter Everts and Maxine Kuhlmann Everts and passed away December 20, 2013. When Porter was born his family lived in Montrose but moved to Bellaire when he was 5 years old and Bellaire was “country.” As soon as he could ride a bicycle, Porter was exploring anywhere within a three mile radius of his home. He brought home detailed and colorful accounts of his travels, especially observations of wildlife and had additional travel tales that the family didn’t get to hear about until he was an adult. Porter attended Condit Elementary School, Pershing Jr. High School, and Lamar High School where he was on the basketball team. He followed his father to Texas A&M University at a time when it was all male and all students were in the Cadet Corp. As a result, the two years after graduation were spent in the Army, starting at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. While Porter was in high school and college, he worked summers on a pipeline survey crew. He said that wading waist deep through the Louisiana swamps was what motivated him to finish college with a business degree. After the Army, he worked in banking, real estate, and business consulting. Since retirement, Porter’s second home has been the Memorial Golf Course where he was always working on his swing and volunteered as a marshal. He also made many good friends there who enriched his life along with the friends of Bill. Both groups supported him through his final illness and, for that, his family is grateful. Porter is survived by his wife, Shara Zatopek; his sister, Ann Porter; his sons, Henry Porter Everts III and C. Dayton Kring II; and his nieces and great nieces.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 4, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in Houston: visitation is at 1pm and the service is at 2pm.
