

Dr. Waxman was preceded in death by his parents, Max Waxman and Helen (Solosky) Waxman, and his sister, Beverly Waxman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Yolanda, with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage, and their two children, David and Sandra, whom he adored.
Hersh was devoted to his family and cherished every moment with them. He loved to travel and explore new foods, enjoyed cheering for the Houston Astros and Texans, and found joy in playing golf with his friends and with David and Sandra. Known for his hard work and generosity, he was always willing to give his time to students, mentoring and guiding them with care and dedication.
Born and educated in Chicago, Dr. Waxman earned his B.A. in Sociology (1972), M.Ed. (1978), and Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation (1982) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center (1982–1983).
Dr. Waxman’s career spanned more than four decades. At Texas A&M University, he served as Professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture, Director of the Education Research Center, and Co-Director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Previously, he held leadership roles at the University of Houston, including Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Educational Research Center.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Waxman authored over 150 scholarly articles and co-edited numerous influential books. His work focused on teacher education, classroom learning environments, and supporting students at risk of academic failure. He secured millions of dollars in research funding and received numerous honors, including awards from the American Educational Research Association, the University of Houston, Houston City Council, and Texas A&M University for his contributions to teaching and research excellence.
His commitment to education touched countless lives, and his scholarship will continue to inspire future generations. He is remembered as a visionary leader, mentor, and advocate for educational equity and as a beloved husband, father, and friend.
