Imogene Henne Elliott, known to all as Oma, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021 in Houston, Texas. She was born April 15, 1931 in New Braunfels, Texas to Eugene and Mamie Henne. She lived the simple New Braunfels life; swimming in the river and natural spring pool, picnics, parades, Camp Warneke and working at Henne Hardware. She attended New Braunfels High School where she was involved in many clubs and fundraising activities. When she graduated high school she attended one semester at Purdue University and immediately came home because it was too cold for her Texas blood. She enrolled at Southwest Texas Teachers College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Her teaching career began at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She left there to teach Home Economics at New Braunfels ISD.
Imogene and her Husband Bob moved to Houston in 1960 to start teaching school in Houston ISD. She taught in the classroom and was a coordinator in various elementary schools. She retired after 37 years of service in 1993.
Her most treasured time was spent with family during the Christmas season, her most favorite time of year. Bob would just give her credit cards and say, “Just go for it!” She also enjoyed having grandkids. She was involved in all their activities; plays, school programs, baseball and softball, sending cookies or cupcakes to school. She would host sleepovers like a champ. Then came the great grandkids. She told stories, played school and cards, brought dolls to “life”, made mudpies, and hosted sleepovers for a new generation. She loved being with them and did anything and everything to make them happy.
While spending time with family was the most important part of her life, she enjoyed many things. She was fascinated with Las Vegas, loved pink flamingos, Snow White, butterflies, watching TV, and was a “collector” of many things. She always enjoyed having friends over to sit around, smoking cigarettes, and talking through hours of laughter. Oma was a person with a giant heart and an awesome amount of love to give to everyone she came in contact with.
She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Knight and RaeGene Greenough, and son David Staats and wife Kerry; grandchildren Stephanie Knight, Troy Knight and wife Sherry, Brandy Knight, BobbieRae Greenough, Heather Staats-Musloski and husband Jason, John Fuschich and wife Danika, Katrina Tieman and husband Phillip, Shane Staats and wife Emma; great-grandchildren Robert Knight, Sterling and Cooper Ryals, Starla and Trinity Haggerton, Erika and Hunter Silber, Logan and Zoey Fucshich; great-great grandchild Keegan Burdette and many other family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Elliott, her brother Cecil Henne and sister Maxine.
A visitation for Imogene will be held Monday, December 6, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, Texas 77008. Funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 10:00 AM, at the Heights Funeral Home.
