James Luther Vining

Jim was born to James L and Edith Terrell, February 2, 1944, in Orange, Texas. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1962 and received a scholarship to Rice University where he played football and received a Bachelor of Commerce in 1966. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1966 in the 16th round. He loved sports and made many lifelong friends. He enjoyed going to the Rice Huddle up every spring at Billy Hale’s ranch.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Vining, Lance and Paula Vining, Loren and Hilary Vining, Jeff and Claire Vining, Jared Mathews, and Chad and Patricia Perry. His much loved grandchildren, Brittany, Taylor, Julia, Layton, Johnathan, Hendrix, Kit and Isabella. His great grands, Ayden and Karlie. His brother Bob and Francine Vining and their children; Craig and Carla Vining, Kristine and Rick Hernandez and Josh and Alexis Vining and their children. His brother in law, Chip Knost and niece Kristie Knost.

He was preceded in death by his father James L, his mother Edith and his sister Joan Tune and her husband Dick and son Wes.

He loved the outdoors and teaching the boys about hunting, fishing and camping. There are many stories of their adventures including many meals cooked in dutch ovens in the ground including biscuits, peach cobblers, blueberry pancakes and fried dove. Later these events included the girl friends who later became wives.

Jim was a home builder until he retired shortly after his bout with

GastroEsophageal Cancer in 2002. He was given a 15% chance of survival and we are blessed to have had him for another 24 years. After his treatment, he wanted to see the world and made it to over 100 countries. He enjoyed family, friends and travel.
