Janet was born to Dudley and Gladys Lancaster, on February 15, 1930, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The family lived in nearby Seminole. She had two sisters, Lu Anne and Karen. She graduated from high school and attended an all girl’s college, Ward Belmont, in Nashville, TN. After a year, she returned to attend The University of Oklahoma, in Norman where her older sister, Lu Anne was a senior.
It was there that Janet met the love of her life, Bill Granot. Maybe it was the little yellow shorts outfit or her 24” waist, but they fell madly in love. They married in January 1951 and had their first daughter, Cindy in February 1952 and second, Pam, in May 1953. Bill graduated from ROTC and entered the Air Force during the Korean War where served overseas. Janet was left to raise two girls, 14 months apart, while he served his country.
After his commitment to the service, the family settled in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Bill worked as an engineer for Armco Steel. They built a wonderful life in “The Sparkling City by the Sea” and made life long friends. Corpus remained their beloved home until 2017, when they moved to Houston due to health issues.
Janet worked at raising two girls, which was never easy in the 1960’s. She had a wonderful circle of friends and loved her two Bridge Clubs. She was inherently fastidious and worried about every detail being perfect. She loved to bake and her pies and chocolate cakes were the envy of her friends and neighbors. But the chocolate chip cookies stole the show.
While in Corpus, they attended both the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches. Janet was involved in Charity Club and worked along side her many friends to help those in need. As a child, Janet loved ballet and thought of pursuing her passion until an ankle injury spoiled those hopes. But she loved to dance. As a couple, they shared numerous festive evenings at the Corpus Christi Country Club or the Town Club holding each tight on the dance floor to the tunes of Frank Sinatra.
Janet is survived by: daughters Cindy Segal and husband Rami Segal, Pam Karter and partner Ann Harris. Grandchildren Mica and Rodrigo De La Garza and their son Lucas, and Jonathan Segal and fiancee Tori Hlavaty. Janet’s sister Karen Wellford and husband Alexander Wellford, Jr. of Memphis, TN. Last but certainly not least, her beloved cat, Mary, aka The Queen.
The family would like to thank her incredibly loving caregivers, Leona Thomas, Zahra Georges and Shirley Bannarbie. With their help and compassion, she lived her final years surrounded by love.
On Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10am, there will be a graveside ceremony at Forest Park
Lawndale Cemetery. A celebration of her life will follow in March.
