Joan was born on a farm in Macomb, Illinois in 1934. She lived in the homestead acquired in 1864 by her great-grandfather Michael Callahan. Raised in love by her mother Ruth Webster and her father John Patrick Callahan, she spent more time goofing off than she did working.
She attended a one-room school house until high school. She then went to Western High School in Macomb where she made lifelong friends.
Joan attended Western Illinois State College in 1951 – 1953. After college, she visited her Uncle Chick and Aunt Marie in Orlando, Florida and fell in love with the warmth and sunshine. Soon after this visit, she moved to Orlando and began a long career in the banking industry.
While living in Orlando, Joan met and fell in love with a musician and painter by the name of Wilfred Fernard (Tony) Fillion. They were married in 1959 and had two children: Doreen Ruth in 1962 and Kenneth Patrick in 1964.
Joan later married Korean War veteran Jerry Bryant Hill in 1973. A few months later, they moved to Houston, Texas.
Joan enjoyed listening to music, dancing, watching movies, reading, and most of all, going to a good party.
She is survived by her daughter Doreen Ruth Fillion, her son Kenneth Patrick Fillion, her granddaughters Melissa Joanne Burnham and Ashley Hill, her son-in-law Daniel Wayne Carpenter, her daughter-in-law Kimberly Diane Fillion and nephew Randy Gibson.
In the new year, Joan has inspired her loved ones to focus on the joy of life and love. We will carry her in our hearts for now and always.
Condolences may be sent to Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home at 13102 North Freeway, Houston, TX 77060.
