Joann Fritcher passed away peacefully at her home Friday, April 17, 2026, with her beloved husband, Ed, by her side. Her three children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren were able to spend time with her and say goodbyes before passing. Joann was born on May 6, 1937, in the Beat Five area of Lee County, Texas. She was the youngest of six children born to Connor and Myra (McClellan) Wood. She will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished Mamma.
At the age of 13, following the passing of her mother, Joann began her lifelong role as a caretaker. She took on the responsibilities of managing the household and caring for her father and brother. In 1955, she graduated from Dime Box High School and soon followed her sisters to Houston. During this time, she met Ed Fritcher at a SPJST Lodge. They married June 1, 1957, at First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell. After Ed completed his military service, they settled in the Spring Branch area, where they began their family. While raising her children, Joann became a licensed beautician, a skill she continued to practice throughout her life.
Joann had a remarkable gift for homemaking. She could cook, bake or sew anything, and she created a warm and welcoming home filled with love, including home-cooked meals – dessert always included – every night. She and Ed were deeply involved in their children’s lives, serving on various PTAs, Athletic Associations and Booster Clubs.
In 1987, Joann embraced what she considered her greatest joy – becoming “Mamma.” She adored her grandchildren, caring for them often, attending their many activities, and making sure they had everything they needed. If she couldn’t find something, she made it herself. She cut their hair, cheered them on at events, and celebrated every milestone. Joann truly embodied the role of a family matriarch. She made holidays especially magical, particularly Christmas, with beautifully decorated homes, handmade stockings, thoughtful gifts, and an abundance of homemade treats. For many years, she brought the family together by hosting weekly Sunday dinners, serving as the heart and glue of her family.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Connor and Myra Wood, and her siblings: Bess Smith, Frank Wood, Dorsie Griffith, Callie Saenger, and Douglas Wood.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ed Fritcher; her children, Robynn (Jeff) Osborne, Russ (Mindy) Fritcher, and Roger (Kellie) Fritcher; her grandchildren, Megan (Shaun) Swonke, Mandi Shushtari, Connor (Kaitlyn) Fritcher, Brooke (Adam) Miksch, Mackenzie (Mike) Johnson, Ashley Fritcher, Bailey Fritcher and Blaine Fritcher; And her great grandchildren: Kennedy, Carson, Addison, Khloe, Wyatt, Hadley Jo, Kade, Ryleigh, Patton and Presley. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, TX. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30th, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1515 Hillendahl in Houston. A private family burial will follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine Drive in Houston.
