John Akin was my supervisor when I worked at Transco back in the mid 70’s. I was there for a couple of years and enjoyed my time there. I received an offer from another company and had to move on. It wasn’t until I left Transco that I realized how much John taught me. For years, it bothered me that I had not thanked him for that wonderful gift of his knowledge and experience. A few decades passed and I happened to see John at an event. I had to take advantage of the opportunity to let him know of my regard for him. His wife was there and she got a bit choked up by the gesture. I’m so thankful that I got a chance to see him again and let him know what was in my heart. I just retired in January 2025. I can honestly attribute my longevity in the industry to the gift he gave me. 

One helluva guy…

Doesn’t seem like it has been a year since my cousin, John Akin passed away.  He was so sweet and caring.  Miss him so much.   Prayers to John in heaven.  He is with Janice, his parents and his youngest brother, Jim.. ✝️. Margaret & Ed Fitzgerald

My heart goes out to the Akin family.  I am going to miss him dearly.  John and I would sometimes spend what seemed forever laughing and talking on the phone.   He helped to fill the void after his younger brother Jim passed. I am so thankful I got to know John.

This was likely taken in about 1964 or 1965 at the Akin home on Norview Dr. in Houston, TX.  John may have been at Fort Hood during this time before he shipped out to Vietnam.

This is a family treasured photo.  A young John Akin saluting his Uncle Frank Akin who was in the Army Air Corp in World War II and served in Burma.

The Akin family in the 1950's in the Houston Woodland Heights home of Mary and Otis Akin.  John is seated on the couch at the back.  His brother Richard is right in front of him.   His mom and dad (Betty and John aka Bud) are seated with Jim Akin on the floor.  There are a number of other aunts, uncles, and cousins in the picture.

The Akin boys in birth order.  John, Richard, and Jim.  There was never a dull moment when all 3 were together.  There was always laughter and conversation.

Our Sympathy to Chris in the loss of his Father; and Richard Waine in the loss of his Brother; and my cousin John.  John was a kind, considerate, and loving person.  He loved it when we would bring Popeyes fried chicken breasts over, and pineapple upside-down cakes.
He complained about all the cats that lived in his yard, but loved them, because he made sure they got fed.
He proudly served his country in the Vietnam war.  Had PTSD for a while afterward.
He loved his family.
Today (August 11,2023) would have been your 82birthday.  Happy heavenly birthday.
He is at peace and comfort in the Lords hands now.
