John Alexander Atkinson Jr.

John A. Atkinson, Jr., 69, a native Houstonian and long time insurance agent, passed away Tuesday, August 10, following a battle with cancer. John was born October 22, 1940 to John and Ellen Nona Atkinson. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters Peggy and Nancy. He is survived by his loving wife Dr. Denise J. Giuffrida, his sons John III and Dean, his daughter Rainey, grandchildren Ainsleigh and Alexander, sister Sallye Sykes, and mother-in-law, Etta Giuffrida, as well as numerous other family members.

John was a graduate of San Jacinto High School and the University of Houston. He joined Atkinson Bros. Insurance Agency, the agency established by his father and uncle in 1936. Growing up, he was active in scouting. Later, he belonged to the South End Optimist Club and the Greenway Plaza Optimist Club. During the 1970s, he served as lieutenant governor of the Optimist organization.

John and Denise, along with Rainey and Dean, spent many evening outings dancing which brought great joy to John. He will be missed very much by family and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 13, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home & Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale, Houston. Services will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM, also at Forest Park Lawndale. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society.
