Born on July 21, 1939, in Houston, Texas, to the late Lucia Treviño and Antonio Gonzales, John was a proud native Houstonian. After graduating from Jefferson Davis High School, he began a distinguished 39-year career with the Houston Police Department, serving his community with unwavering honor and dedication.
John’s greatest joy was his family. He built a life of love and stability for his beloved Ernestine, and he opened doors of opportunity for his children—Lydia, Anthony, Lucinda, and Zack. His influence extends even further through his seven accomplished grandchildren and one treasured great-granddaughter, each a reflection of the foundation he laid.
John was also a lifelong sports and outdoor enthusiast. He had a passion for competitive games of all kinds. He especially enjoyed gathering with family and friends during hunting trips or over billiards or a lively rummy game. He was also an avid Houston Astros fan and rarely missed watching a game. His energy, good humor, and competitive spirit made every match, big or small, one to remember.
Those who carry his love forward include his loving wife of 64 years, Ernestine Ramirez Gonzales; his children and their spouses—Lydia (Robert) Brown of Austin, John (Debbie) Gonzales of Houston, Lucinda (Robert) Bailey of Austin, and Zachary (Lori) Gonzales of Spring; his grandchildren—Kaitlynn Gonzales, Jannel Gonzales, Chase (Faith) Bailey, Garrett Bailey, Sarah Gonzales, Alex Gonzales, and Madilyn Gonzales; and his great-granddaughter, Daryn Gonzales. He is also survived by his brother, Victor Gonzales of Spring, along with numerous extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.
John was preceded in death by his parents Lucia Treviño and Antonio Gonzales, his brother Ben Gonzales, and his sisters Margaret Meraz and Frances Soria.
