

John C. “Butch” Smith was born in Oakland, California on May 14, 1943, to Mildred and Lonnie Smith Sr. The family later relocated to Houston, Texas, where he attended Booker T. Washington Senior High School.
John proudly served in the United States Army for several years. After proudly serving his country, he returned to Houston, Texas where he began his career at Walgreens warehouse. He worked diligently until his retirement. John was known for his incredible cooking skills, mastering everything from barbecue to gumbo.
Cooking brought him great joy, and he continued to share his passion with those around him throughout his life. John showed his love through his cooking, often cooking for his family and friends. John fell ill while doing his favorite thing, “cooking” John was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Smith; his parents, Mildred and Lonnie Smith Sr.; two brothers, Hollis and Lonnie Jr.
After the passing of his wife, John found companionship with a special lady, Kathleen Draper, who he lovingly referred to as “Kat”. Kat remained an important part of his life until his passing.
He is survived by his common-law wife, Kathleen Draper; his daughter, LaShawn (Adonte’) of Antioch, CA. ; brother, Robert Smith; and three sisters, Polly Gentry, Lucy Chenault (Hilary), and Mildred Smith, all of TX. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Thomesia Smith-Hawkins (Kendrell) of New Orleans, LA, Shakeea Smith, and Thomas Smith III, of Oakland, CA; as well as three beautiful great-grand-children, Thombiyas Hawkins and infant twins, Thomawn and Tamryn Hawkins; a special niece/God daughter, “Red”.
John’s memory will also be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his love for cooking, John had a generous spirit and supported St. Jude’s Children’s Foundation. His warmth and kindness touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
