Longing no more and surrounded by his family at home, Larry Melvin McIntyre of Cypress, Texas passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on August 24, 2022.
Larry McIntyre was born in Livingston, Texas on March 4, 1937. He was the beloved son of Buster and Rady McIntyre and big brother to Linda. His parents taught him the value of hard work and dedication to family. Larry had several jobs early in life including a shoeshine business (with a box made for him by his dad) and a paper route. He enjoyed life in the country as a young boy helping his dad and granddad in their gardens and getting into mischief with his numerous cousins.
Job opportunities led the family to move to the big city of Houston in the early 1940s. After graduating Austin High School in 1955, he served in the Air Force Reserves for six years while attending the University of Houston. God providentially led his family to First Baptist Church of Genoa where he would meet Martha Ann Boulter, his wife of 34 years and later serve as deacon, Sunday School teacher and in many other leadership roles. Larry and Martha touched many lives in their ministry to the Lord and others during their years at Genoa. During her battle with cancer, he was her unfailing strength until the Lord called her home.
Larry dreamed of being an architect and in his later years meticulously designed two homes, but his career path took him a different direction into hospital administration. He got his start working at the Hermann Professional Building managing the parking garage. From this humble beginning, he went on to work administratively at several hospitals, retiring from MD Anderson in 2004. Larry was loved and respected by his coworkers and staff as someone who intentionally invested in the lives of those with whom he worked. It was during this time at MD Anderson that his path would cross with Susan Coates. They married in 1996 and recently celebrated 26 years together. Susan lovingly and devotedly cared for Larry during the last months of his time here on earth.
Larry loved being outdoors and for a while returned to his country roots raising cattle in Hempstead. He also enjoyed woodworking, “piddling” in his shop, long country drives in his truck and singing along to his favorite Gaither hymns. His greatest loves in life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Always supportive and never missing a teachable moment to share his wisdom and knowledge with the next generation. As Dad and Papa, he was faithful in every season and left a legacy of Godly love that will impact generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents Buster and Rady McIntyre and his first wife Martha Boulter McIntyre. He is survived by his wife, Susan Coates McIntyre, his sister, Linda McIntyre Secor, his daughters, Tracie Golden (Paul) and Amy McIntyre, his bonus daughters, Julie Henderson (John Marc), and Laura ‘Lorin’ Camp. Grandchildren Katherine (Tyler) Smith, Kayla Golden, Evan Henderson, Clay Henderson and Finley Hale. Great grandchildren Bennett and Madilynn Smith as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Larry will be held Friday, September 2, 2022 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Chapel of Angels at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A funeral service will occur Friday, September 2, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A committal service will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MD Anderson Cancer Hospital Melanoma Department.
