Gilbert , Phillip and Family -  Your Mom was so sweet and kind...And as many have expressed - a great and warm smile!   We will all miss her...yet find comfort in knowing she is in Heaven w/your Dad and my Dad, Homer Ng, along with others she loved here on Earth that are also in Heaven.  God Bless your family as you grieve her loss.  Take care and remember all the good times and Smile.  She and your Dad were blessings to us all.  Thanks for sharing the many photos of  your family.

Always a big smile and warm greeting from both Lillian and Wayne in our early growing up years.  The Chinese love expression "Have you eaten yet" was eagerly shared by Lillian within 5 minutes of greeting each other.  Many delicious home cooked meals and treats were always lovingly prepared by her for our journey back and studies at UT.   It was good to visit with Lillian recently at Gil's restaurant event last year which rekindled many warm memories of this wonderful "Auntie".  

Gil, Philip, Joyce, and families,  May God's Grace give you comfort as she has lived a full and wonderful earthly life and is now reunited back with Wayne.

Once they retired, Wayne and Lillian attended mahjong dinners and a honeymoon trip back to China to meet family and relatives. Getting bored of retired life, Wayne and Lillian ventured into the restaurant business by opening Bar B Q Eng in 1979 to “pass the time”. She liked to tell the story of how when they first opened, a customer ordered a hamburger but she forgot to put in the patty. From that point on, they enlisted their two young granddaughters to help! 

During Philip and Joyce’s wedding, they reconnected with long distant relatives and met the Yeangs – their new extended family. They were also excited to be able “put on their dancing shoes.”
After Wayne’s passing, Lillian started the next chapter in her life in becoming a full-time grandmother and eventual great-grandmother. With much patience, she taught the grandkids how to speak elementary Chinese, share toys, and clean up any mess they made, in other words, responsibility. As her grandsons grew older, she enjoyed attending their activities such as bowling, basketball games, and band concerts.
Cooking was always one of Lillian’s greatest passions as evident by her owning a restaurant. Even before then, she would provide meals for the staff at the grocery store. She didn’t stop once she was retired either as she continued cooking holiday meals for her family and friends.

In her later years, Lillian slowed down but faithfully read her bible daily and especially looked forward to visiting with her great-grandchildren at birthdays and holidays, plus attending their activities such as gymnastics and soccer games. After cooking holiday meals for so many years, she enjoyed being able to relax as her kids and grandkids did the majority of the cooking.

In closing, Lillian had a saying, “We’re only here in this world for vacation, it may be long or be short, but when the Lord calls us back home, it’s time to go to work!”  Rest well, Lillian, time to go to work soon. 


                                                  Life History of Lillian Eng
During the 96 years of her life, Lillian was a devoted and hardworking wife, a patient but stern parent, and a loving and caring grandmother.
Lillian L Eng was born on March 14, 1924 in the village of Suey Poo Wong Link near the town of Taishan City in Guangdong, China. Growing up, she helped her mother plant rice and vegetables to sell at the local market. During rough times around WW II, the crops were a life saver. Hungry individuals would come by and she remembered her mother would give them what they could. Lillian and her siblings would have to escape to the mountains from the Japanese soldiers with only a pot of rice to live on until they left the area. She said her brother sneaked out some salty seasoning to give it flavor.
Lillian met her husband Wayne while he was stationed in China and came to the United States as a wartime bride in 1946. The newlyweds begin their adventure by settling down in Houston, TX. While learning both a new language and the nuances of the grocery business, in addition to raising their kids, Lillian and Wayne started to live out “the American dream”. With hard work, they saved up enough money to own and successfully operate several grocery stores. 
As a young parent, Lillian stressed the importance of education and studying hard to her kids. But, when it came time for her to obtain a driver’s license, her son Gil turned the tables on her and was instrumental in helping her study.  While she worked long hours at the grocery store during the week, her days off were dedicated to caring for her family. She did everything from shuttling her kids to Sunday school to providing the simple comforts of home.
