Our mother, Lupe O. Fraga passed away on November 21, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born in Galveston, Texas to Cecelio and Juana Oropeza on February 24, 1926. She was the fifth born of six children. Her family later moved to the Second Ward neighborhood of Houston, Texas. On August 8, 1948, she married Joe Z. Fraga, Sr. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Their union lasted 52 years and was blessed with five children.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Joe R. Fraga, daughter Rosalinda Fraga Chambers and her siblings Pete Oropeza, Mike Oropeza, Quentin Oropeza, Mary T. Vazquez, and Elodia O. Reyna.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Joe O. Fraga (Maria), Honorable David O. Fraga (Nelda), son-in-law J. Paul Chambers, Lucy Fraga Fisher Cain (Greg) and Angel O. Fraga (Dani). Grandchildren: Joe R. Fraga II, Matthew R. Fraga, Michael R. Fraga, Joshua D. Fraga, Eric A. J. Fraga, Amanda K. Fraga, John P. Chambers, Jr., Peter A. Chambers, Emily R. Chambers, John D. Fisher, Jr., Joe Z. Fisher and Cadence H. Fraga. Great-Grandchildren: Adrianna, Joe Thomas, Alyssa and Adilyn Fraga. Loving niece, Inocencia Marquez-Garcia and former son-in-law, John C. Fisher. Brothers-in-law, Felix Fraga, wife Nelly, Lupe (Champ) Fraga, wife Irene and Tom Fraga. The family would like to thank Mom’s long-time caregiver, Maria Madrid and her young daughter, Merlen, for providing such wonderful care and joy to Mom.
Mom was an independent woman before her time. Mom received her cosmetology license at the age of 45 and began driving at the age of 65. Due to working in the fields as a young girl, Mom never received a formal education. Therefore, she along with our Dad made certain that all their children attended and graduated from college. We are so forever thankful for their loving support. Mom was tough, honest, hardworking and loving, but most of all, she was devoted to her family. We will miss her dearly, but we know she will always be in our heart.
