Margie Atwood Barrett, 94, passed away on December 28, 2024 at Buckner Parkway Place in Houston, where she had been a resident for 12 years. Margie was born on June 26, 1930 in Hamlin, TX to James Preston Atwood and Eva (Dennis) Atwood.
Margie lived most of her life in west Texas, graduating from Eula High School in 1948 and then she went to beauty school in Dallas. Then she returned to Kermit, TX to begin her career as a beautician. In Kermit, she met the love of her life, Norman Barrett. Norman and Margie were married on April 7, 1955 in Kermit, where they settled. Norman worked for Mobil, and they lived in several oil field towns: Hobbs, NM, Breckenridge, TX, and Midland, TX, but the majority of her life, she lived in Kermit. Norman and Margie shared 42 years together before he passed away in 1997.
When Russell was born in 1957 and Susan came along in 1963, Margie began her work at what she considered to be one of her most important jobs: being a mom.
Margie was a woman of faith, who spent her life sharing the love of Jesus and serving in many ways: as a preschool Sunday School teacher, as a sponsor on many church youth trips, and as a Pink Lady volunteer at the Winkler County Hospital. Wherever they lived, Norman and Margie made it a priority for the family to be involved in a local Baptist church. They were members of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church in Hobbs, Grace Temple Baptist Church in Kermit, and Crestview Baptist Church in Midland. For the last 12 years of her life, Margie was a member of Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston.
Margie enjoyed sewing and crocheting; she made many articles of clothing for her family throughout the years, including Susan’s wedding dress. She also enjoyed reading, but she made her daily Bible reading a priority. Before she would pick up a novel, she made sure that she had read the Bible chapters that she would need to complete in order to read through the Bible each year. More than 30 times (once a year) Margie completed her annual goal of reading the Bible through, and each year she would select a different translation to read for that particular year.
Margie is preceded in death by her parents (Jim and Eva Atwood), her beloved husband Marvin Norman Barrett, her sisters, Joyce Stewart and Frankie Bannister, and her daughter, Susan Barrett O’Quinn.
Margie is survived by her son Russell and his wife Betty (of Bryan, TX), her son-in-law Jimmie O’Quinn (of Fort Yukon, AK), six grandchildren (Brandon, Justin, Kellie, Lydia, Alisan, and Jamie), eight great grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and many other family members.
A graveside service for Margie was held on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Woodland Park Cemetery, in Mineral Wells, TX. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 7, 2025 at Buckner Parkway Place, 1321 Park Bayou Drive, Houston, TX 77077.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation to the Gideons, Buckner International, or the American Cancer Society be made in Margie’s honor.
