With great love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Martin Garcia Castro, of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, who departed this life surrounded by the family he so deeply cherished. Born on July 5, 1937, Martin was raised on a ranch in Tamaulipas, where his lifelong values of hard work, humility, and devotion to loved ones were first formed. As a young man, he emigrated to the United States, determined to build a better life for his future family.
Martin was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 52 years, Ofelia Garcia Medina, who passed in 2005. He remained devoted to her memory every day thereafter.
He is survived by his daughters, Laura Garcia-Trevino and husband Rogelio Trevino Jr., and Carina Garcia Valadez and husband Eduardo A. Valadez.
His four grandsons, whom he adored and who were the greatest joy of his later years, survive him as well: Ivan Alexander Trevino, Isaac Martin Trevino, Cristian Eduardo Valadez, and Jacob Max Valadez.
He is also survived by his siblings: Dora Godoy Garcia, Cesar Garcia, Ramiro Garcia, Sergio Garcia, Jorge Garcia, Horacio Garcia, and Alvaro Garcia, along with their spouses.
Martin leaves behind five sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, along with their spouses, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He is lovingly remembered by a great number of nieces and nephews — all of whom shared a deep mutual affection with him — as well as countless cousins and friends whose lives were touched by his kindness and quiet strength.
Martin worked for many years as a contractor in fence construction, earning a reputation for his reliability, work ethic, and generosity. His true passion, however, was spending time with his family. After the passing of his beloved wife, his greatest comfort and joy came from being with his daughters, sons-in-law, and especially his four grandsons, whom he loved beyond measure.
A lifelong Astros baseball fan, Martin would often watch the same games on repeat, joking that “maybe if I watch it again, they’ll win this time.” He also enjoyed watching boxing, a pastime that brought him both nostalgia and joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ofelia Garcia Medina; his parents, Jose Garcia and Maria Luisa Garcia Castro; his brother and best friend, Jose “Pepe” Garcia Jr.; and his sisters, Maria Luisa Botello Garcia and Elva Arevalo Garcia.
Martin Garcia Castro will be remembered for his unwavering love, steady presence, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he helped shape, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
