We gather here today to honor and celebrate the life of Mary Zavala Hernandez, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Born on July 19, 1935, in Houston, Texas, Mary lived a long, beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and unwavering strength.
Raised in Houston’s Second Ward, Mary grew up surrounded by community and love, values she carried with her throughout her life. She proudly earned her GED from the University of Houston–Downtown College in 1979, showing that it’s never too late to pursue education and personal growth. She devoted 43 years of her life as a nurse’s clerk at St. Joseph Hospital—her quiet compassion and dedication leaving a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late Jesse Hernandez, with whom she built a loving and faith-filled home. She is preceded in death by her husband Jesse, her parents Pablo and Santos Zavala, and her dear sisters Josie Hernandez and Gloria Longoria.
Mary’s heart was most full when surrounded by her family. She is survived by her loving sisters Sylvia Valdez and Rosalie Brillon (Gil), her devoted children—son William Peña (Margie) and daughter Juanita Flores—along with a proud legacy of 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Her love for them was boundless, and her guidance will continue to echo through generations.
She especially loved watching her grandchildren grow and supporting them in everything they did. She found great joy in making her famous homemade tortillas for family gatherings, a tradition filled with love and warmth. Mary enjoyed going on drives, stopping by Luby’s or Chick-fil-A for a comforting meal, and never missed a moment to look her best—always keeping her hair and makeup just right. She never went anywhere without her purse—always prepared, always classy, and always herself. These little joys added sparkle to her days and brought smiles to those around her.
A woman of deep faith, Mary also found joy in the quiet moments—attending church, reading, and cherishing time with her family. Her presence brought warmth, her words brought comfort, and her life brought inspiration to everyone who knew her.
Though she passed away on Friday, August 1st, 2025, at the age of 90, Mary Zavala Hernandez leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and unconditional love. Her memory will forever be a blessing.
Rest peacefully, Mary. You were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten.
