Maria Eva Lopez, lovingly known as Mary and Vita, 93 years young, passed away peacefully in Frisco, Texas, surrounded by love and care. She was born on April 1, 1932, in Laredo, Texas, where she met the love of her life, Esteban Lopez. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising seven children in Hammond, Indiana, and were devoted members of All Saints Church.
Mary was a woman of deep creativity and gentle strength. Her talents touched every corner of her life—whether through her exquisite ceramic works, intricate crochet and embroidery pieces, or the heartfelt, homemade greeting cards she crafted with love. She was also an exceptional seamstress, known for her skill and artistry.
Above all, Mary was a genuinely good and gracious soul. She lived by example, instilling in her family the values of respect, kindness, and unconditional love. Her legacy is one of compassion, warmth, and enduring family bonds.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Esteban Lopez, and two sons, Steve and Danny. She is survived by her children Sylvia Bonham (Bill) of Clinton, TN; David Lopez (Liz) of Griffith, IN; Robert Lopez (Maria Helena aka Helen) of Frisco, TX; MaryAnn Dziepak (Terry) of Schererville, IN; Diana Lopez (Tim) of Clinton, TN; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and her loyal furry companion, Boy, who never left her side.
Fond memories from her children:
Sylvia; When Mom lived in Clinton, I would take her shopping once a week. I would pick her up about 10am. The first thing she would say when we got into the car was “Where are we having lunch?” She enjoyed the lunches together to just sit and talk. I loved the time we had just me and her.
David; Sacrifice, Mom made many of those for us, taking care of seven kids and a husband. She made sure we didn’t go without the things we needed, clothing, food and TLC. Mom made these sacrifices at the expense of having the things she wanted in life. Even into our adult hood we always went to Mom for things, her time, and maybe a home cooked meal. Her sacrifices to us were a conveyance of her love to us. As we grew older, we made sure she didn’t go without the things she wanted and needed. To that I say, thank you Mom and I'll always love you for that. May the Lord wrap his arms around you and give you the love that we as your family always had from you. I love you, Mom.
Robert; I enjoyed the meals Mom would make when Helena and I visited in Laredo, Texas, and when she lived in Frisco, Texas. Most of all I loved returning the favor making Mom’s delicious queso fresco enchiladas for her the way she taught us. Mom had a great sense of humor; her smile and laugh will forever be with me.
MaryAnn; just one of many special memories: When I was around 13 years old, Mom took me to a doctor’s appointment while everyone else was at school. Afterwards we went to a five and dime store in Woodmar Mall where we drank milk shakes at the soda fountain shop. Mom told me she worked at a soda fountain shop like that in Laredo while in high school – first I heard of that! Spending that one-on-one time with Mom was wonderful. We talked about meaningful things and shared lots of laughs. Throughout my life Mom has always made me feel special. Her spirit will live in me forever.
Diana; I fondly remember our yearly family vacations with all seven kids squished into our station wagon on our way to visit Guelita and Guelito in Laredo, Texas. We always packed Mom’s delicious chicken salad sandwiches ~ there was nothing better! Growing up, our usual everyday snacks were Mom’s homemade tortillas (tortilla con mantequilla). She was a great mother who poured her heart into raising seven kids.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all those that provided loving support and care over the last 3 plus years. Especially:
