Mary Diaz Olivarez, 71, went home to be with Our Lord on May 23, 2013. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some small way throughout her very memorable life.
She was born July 2, 1941, in Houston, TX to Jose Diaz and Anita Varela. At the age of 16 Mary was married to Atanacio Olivarez Jr. on December 8, 1957. She was retired after over 20 years of working in the school cafeteria at Elliot Elementary.
She was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church, belonged to the Alter Society and sponsored a young girl from the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.
Her interests included spending time with her family, gardening, singing, and giving thanks to Our Lord for her many blessings. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to her mother, and other family members.
She is survived by her husband Atanacio Olivarez Jr., of 55 years, her son Matthew Olivarez, her daughter and spouse Anna & Robert Lucio, 3 grandsons, Matthew Olivarez, Sebastian Olivarez, and Joseph Nunez, 2 granddaughters, Samantha Diaz-Olivarez and Maya Ramirez, 1 great-grandson, Adrian Olivarez, her mother Anita Perez, her brother Paul Diaz, 2 sisters Epifanía Estrada and Delores Barboza, and many nieces and nephews.
