

Mattie “Genell” Wootan passed away Sunday, August 10 at the age of 91. She is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Alvin Maurice Wootan; her parents, Abner Dall Childress and Marguerite Martin Childress; her brothers, Lawrence Childress and Gerald Childress; and her precious great-grandson, David Kyle Schulze. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bill Spillman; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Rhonda Wootan; grandchildren – Stacy Spillman and David Schulze, Stephanie Spillman and Jason Mire, Leia Wootan and Keith Koehler, Rachel Wootan, and Rori Wootan; great-grandchildren – Anna Marguerite Steves, Ellie Kyle Steves, Joby Mire , Zain Mire, Lowell Bonham “Bo” Koehler, Evelyn Rose Koehler, Rushelle Rounds, Jordan Dove; great-great grandchild, Alyssa Rounds; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andy and Mary Ann Wooten, and sister-in-law, Maxine Childress. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, and she retired from Houston Independent School District. She was an avid ballroom and line dancer as well as an enthusiastic member of the Northwest YMCA and was featured in a variety of their publications. Funeral services will be at Heights Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 12th at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 9 a.m. Genell will be interred later that day in the historic Concord cemetery, Troup, Texas, where she will join generations of her family dating back to the mid-1800’s.
