Michelle Smullin Chapa of Houston, Texas was called home by our Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the age of 73. She was born on April 14, 1953, in Colorado Springs and was the eldest of three children. As the daughter of a military serviceman, Michelle’s family moved frequently throughout her younger years, giving her the opportunity to live abroad both with her family and later independently. Her adventurous spirit and strong sense of independence remained with her throughout her life.
Michelle dedicated much of her life to being a loving homemaker and devoted mother, taking great pride in raising her son and caring for her family. She created a warm and welcoming home filled with love, laughter, and wonderful meals shared together.
She was a passionate supporter of Houston sports and especially enjoyed cheering on the Houston Astros and the Houston Rockets. Michelle also cherished spending time in Galveston with her husband and son, where they enjoyed fishing and making lasting memories together. She loved to cook and was a remarkably talented artist whose creativity brought joy to many.
Michelle was preceded in death by her parents, Signe Susanna Konga and Thomas Elijah Smullin, as well as her brother, Thomas Elijah Smullin III.
She is survived by her loving husband Jose J. Chapa Jr., her son Jose J. Chapa III, and her sister Terryl Scott.
Family and friends are invited to attend Visitation and Rosary services at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home on Monday, May 11, 2026. Family viewing will be held from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with visitation open to the public beginning at 5:00 PM. A Rosary service will begin at 7:00 PM.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at 11:00 AM at the same location.
