

Norman graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1975. After training and serving as a distinguished United States Army Ranger, he had an accomplished career as a petroleum engineer. Norm and his family traveled the world in the process, with Norman eventually becoming an Executive of an oil company, overseeing the operations of thousands of employees.
He was a loving husband and father, having raised five children. He loved reading, and had a passion for History, current events, and economics. He additionally loved to travel, play golf, watch football, and, of course, find more time for reading. He loved playing Scrabble with his family and was adept at inventing plausible words no one dared challenge.
Norman and his family lived in many places over the years, including Panama, Egypt, England, Poland, Bulgaria, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Algeria. Stateside he and his family lived in Georgia, Wyoming, Texas, South Dakota, New York, and Colorado.
Norman is survived by his wife Cecilia Margarita Benson; his daughter Paula Roxana Benson and husband Bruce; his sons, Alexander Norman Benson, Lawrence Gustaf Benson and wife Citlalli, Carlos John Benson and wife Audree, Marcelo Enrique Benson; and eleven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Carlton Benson and wife Ela and sisters, Nancy Brady and husband James, Janlee Irving and husband Ken, Karen Walsh and husband KC, and multiple nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Jean Benson.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the ALS Association Foundation.
A visitation for Norman will be held on Thursday, January 30th, from 5-8pm at Heights Funeral Home at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008. Family will be meeting at Heights Funeral Home at 8:00AM before traveling in Procession to Houston National Cemetery at 8:15AM for Norman’s committal service on Friday January 31st, at 9am at Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038). There will be a Celebration of Life following the committal service on Friday January 31st, at 10:30am at Heights Funeral Home at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008.
