Ramona Moreno Escamilla

Ramona Moreno Escamilla passed away peacefully and amongst family, on Monday, January 29, 2024, at the age of 104. She was born on February 28, 1919, in Sugar Land, Texas to Eulalio and Josefina Moreno. Ramona worked as a Crossing Guard for Franklin Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District for 30 years. She was well known in her neighborhood for her compassion and kindness, and was popular at her crossing guard post at 71st and Canal St. Over the course of her lifetime, she exuded independence, cared for many family members, and spent as much time as possible with friends. She loved family gatherings at her corner house, sitting in her yard, gardening and her plants, her family, James Coney Island hot dogs, her cafecito and pan dulce. She looked forward to her Saturday visits with her sons and could grow anything in her yard. She spoiled her family with her amazing cooking and her desire to feed you, regardless if you were hungry. Ramona is preceded in death by her brothers Apolonio, Elias, Manuel, Pete, Daniel, and Larry Moreno; her loving husband of 63 years, Juan; and sons Johnny, Paul, and Gregory Escamilla. She is survived by her sons Oscar and Ernest Escamilla and daughter Irene Escamilla Shafer; son-in-law Jim Shafer; daughters-in-law Sylvia Rivera, Vera, Mary, and Eloise Escamilla; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Ramona was non-judgemental, respectful, funny, friendly, helpful, forgiving, loving, and strong until her last breath. Regardless of her own pain or her darkest days, her heart remained open and she never complained. Ramona was an amazing example of what a lifetime of sacrifice and love could be.
