Please except my condolences. I met Richard at Richard Anderson Verterans Home. Richard and I became friends and I really enjoyed his company.  I also met his oldest  son while he came to visit one day.Richard will be greatly missed. Please know I'm praying for the family during this difficult time.

RG Henderson was the only uncle I had, and I could not have asked for a better one.  Over the years, he helped me in so many ways, from hanging a rope swing for me to enjoy as a child to putting up a backyard gate after I bought my first home.  When I started learning to cook, he did not care for my recipe choices, and he would tease me, but as I got more skilled, he made a point of complimenting me, and even decades later, he was always careful to eat and praise whatever dish I made at our holiday dinners.  

But more important than what he did for me was what he showed me. Uncle RG modeled generosity, kindness, and humility. Though he and Aunt Diane had a small house and two growing boys, they regularly hosted his favorite uncle, Cecil, a childless bachelor, on weekends.  Cecil had been kind to RG as a child, and he never forgot that. 

In his later years, RG became good friends with the young man next door, Freddie, and he would take Freddie to Sunday school and then out to lunch every week.  Then after he moved to the senior center, Uncle RG fed a disabled woman who was mourning her husband and coaxed her into eating. Even when he was no longer the healthy one, RG was still reaching out to others.   A few months before he died, he was in the hospital, where a young resident oversaw his care.  He made friends with her, inquiring about her tattoos and praising her skills.  As he told me, “She’s studying to be a doctor, and I try to encourage her all I can.”

Though he was so generous, RG never expected anything from anyone, so when people did something for him, even a small act of kindness like bringing him grapes, he would talk about it for days.  He was consistently overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of others. A couple of years ago, my mother and I went to visit him at home one summer day.  When we left, he said, “You’ve made me so happy!”

Uncle RG made so many of us happy.  It was a privilege to be his niece.
